Dragon

Yesterday afternoon, finding Laney curled up in the fetal position on Wrecker’s couch, with streaks from her tears dried and staining her cheeks, nearly undid me. Her computer screen was still lit up, and I paced back and forth, my eyes unwittingly going to it every so often. In the long run, my woman woke and gave me permission to read what had caused her to be so damn distraught.

Needless to say, her words slaughtered me. There were a few things in that letter that I hadn’t known, and it made me want to raise Ezekiel from the dead and slowly, methodically, torture him for all he put her through. He unfolded and started the incidents that she endured, so in my opinion, he is the guiltiest party of them all. That man got off easy, and I hope that Lucifer himself watches over Ezekiel and has him burning for eternity in hell.

As I sit in our room designated for church meetings, anger burns me from my gullet outward. Hate dulls and replaces every other emotion I should be feeling. So when my men come in, joking and laughing, it irks me.

“Find your goddamn seats and sit!” I bark, silencing their playful banter. “We got shit to talk about, and I need you all to shut the fuck up and listen to what I’ve got to say.”

Wrecker must be feeling my rage for himself because he slants his eyelids and points to the table that sits in the middle of the room. No words need to be said when he has that particular look. Everyone knows that today is not the day to mess with either one of us. They hastily do our bidding and the room is now quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

When I have everyone’s attention, I bang my gavel on the table and begin. I don’t hold shit back. I dig into the hard shit. “Let me finish speaking before anyone interjects and puts their two cents in.” They know better, so I’m sure this declaration of mine will be met. “Wrecker and I decided to bring in Psycho and Maniac. Since they’re on the road and have made some less-than-savory contacts, they’re our best bet on finding the burrow our enemies have bunkered down in. I’m sure most of you are opposed to our decision to bring Marcum and Xavier LeBlanc into the fold, but for your sakes, I hope you all choose to bite your damn tongues because I’m not in the mood for your insolent bullshit.”

Animal raises his hand like we’re in a classroom, looking unsure about if this is the right time to interrupt me or not. I nod my head, because out of all of us, he’s the most rational and reasonable. “What brought about this choice? Not that I’m questioning your decision in the long run, but I’m curious. Are our contacts not following through?”

“They’re taking longer than I’d like,” I answer, keeping it short, sweet, and to the point.
